![]() ![]() This novel has overlapping stories that, like tugboats, nudge one another into harbor. It’s an old-fashioned page-turner, tweaked by this witty and sophisticated writer so that you sometimes feel she has retrofitted sleek new engines inside a craft owned for too long by James Jones and Herman Wouk. It’s a dreadnought of a World War II-era historical novel, bristling with armaments yet intimate in tone. ![]() ![]() Jennifer Egan’s immensely satisfying fifth novel, “Manhattan Beach,” the follow-up to “A Visit From the Goon Squad” (2010), which won a Pulitzer Prize, has a good deal of that kind of life-swamping and life-supplementing effect. You live several lives while reading it.” One definition of a great novel, William Styron said, is that it should “leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. ![]()

In 1897, he began an intensive analysis of himself. The same year he married Martha Bernays, with whom he had six children.įreud developed the theory that humans have an unconscious in which sexual and aggressive impulses are in perpetual conflict for supremacy with the defences against them. On his return to Vienna the following year, Freud set up in private practice, specialising in nervous and brain disorders. In 1885, Freud went to Paris as a student of the neurologist Jean Charcot. We hear a lot about how they're both bad but we don't talk about the factors that often lead people to make these decisions and what were the steps prior to publicly calling out harm and violence. Non-Black writers have had a hay-day talking about the toxicity of cancel culture and call out culture while not discussing what actually propels people to utilize these things in the first place. I didn't care for the chapter on cancel culture, namely because I don't believe it exists in the way people like Thom describe. These moments to me seemed to really embody the notion of what it means to choose love and how complicated that choice can be.Īt the same time, the essays around thinking about harm fell flat for me. ![]() I found the poetic thread throughout this book moving, as well as the essays towards the end of the book where the author is really grounded in her experiences with family. ![]() ![]() Captivated by Durrah's magnetic personality, breathtaking beauty, and powerful singing voice, Tamika has found both a friend and mentor in life. ![]() ![]() Why? Because it was me in there, all of me, heart and soul. But I never lost faith in the book or ever wavered in my vision. In a new foreword written in 2014, Coelho explained his situation after his publisher dropped The Alchemist: “I was 41 and desperate. Paulo Coelho kept faith that The Alchemist would be successful. Coelho later wrote that his publisher told him, “This title will never sell more than 900 copies.” After that tiny first run, the book went out of print, and Coelho got to keep the rights to the novel. When a small Brazilian publisher took a chance on The Alchemist in 1988, it hedged its bets by only printing 900 copies. The book’s journey to becoming a commercial juggernaut almost reads like its own Coelho story. The writing may have been fast, but success came very slowly. The Alchemist was not an instant success. ![]() In 2009 the author explained to The Guardian’s Hannah Pool that he was able to write The Alchemist so quickly because, as he put it, “The book was already written in my soul.” 2. ![]() Paulo Coelho only needed to weeks to write The Alchemist. The next portion of Washington’s autobiography covers the Reconstruction period of American history, when the country was trying to rebuild after the Civil War and Black Americans were swiftly granted legal rights formerly stripped from them, such as the right to vote, run for office, start businesses, and own property. After the Union defeated the Confederacy and Lincoln officially emancipated all enslaved people in the United States, Washington began his life as a free man. The first chapter of the book describes the conditions of Washington’s life as a slave from when he was born until he was nine years old, leading up to the end of the Civil War in 1865. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this alternately witty and heartbreaking debut novel, Gabriel Bump gives us an unforgettable protagonist, Claude McKay Love.
